Research interests
My research interest applies to cultural, social, and political history, especially the history of Hong Kong and the British Empire during the Cold War. As a born and bred Hongkonger, I am enthralled by the dynamic forms of life under the power struggles of the Cold War that fostered the modern metropolis. The building of Hong Kong globality varies in multifaced narratives, while I highlight transportation infrastructure in pursuit of elucidating liminal spaces on local, national, regional, and international platforms.
My research project investigates how the Kai Tak Airport marked both the beginning and the end of Cold War Hong Kong through myriads of spaces. In my MA thesis at the University of Hong Kong, titled “Modelling and Satisfying: Modes of Visual Culture in Hong Kong Tourist Consumption, 1960s–1970s,” I quested the shaping of Hong Kong as a travel destination through arts and cultural depictions in urban landscapes, cultural identities, and modern feminism, appealing to the global intersections that Hong Kong gradually explored with the boost of economy. From this foundation, my doctoral project provisionally titled “The Making of Cold War Hong Kong, A Trans-national Cultural Geography Study of the Kai Tak Airport, 1945–1998,” will examine the image of Hong Kong constructed through physical refurbishments at Kai Tak Airport that generated room for discourse about how people imagine and experience both Kai Tak and Hong Kong under the ever-changing geopolitics within the realm of Cold War.
